Ladies, it’s a hot topic, but let’s talk menopause— that special little gift from Mother Nature when she decides, ‘Alright, girl, you’re all done.’ Now, some of you may already be in the thick of it. For the rest, well, buckle up because it is a ROUGH RIDE with hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness, hormonal changes, re-distribution of body fat, weight gain, joint pain and brain fog, to name a few!
First off, senior ladies, hot flashes. You’re sitting there minding your own business, and BOOM, you’re sweating like you just ran a marathon in the Sahara Desert! All you can do is peel off layers and wave at yourself like a church fan.
And sleep? Honey, good luck! You’ll be tossing, turning, and then there’s that one night sweat that soaks the bed. Just remember—don’t take it out on your partner. They’re just trying to survive this rollercoaster too!
Now, if you’ve got a partner, bless their hearts, let them know this is not personal. Just say, ‘Listen, baby, I love you, but these hormones don’t! So if I snap, don’t snap back; just hand me a cold drink and maybe a piece of chocolate.’”
But take comfort in the fact that you are resourceful. Although the changes in your body that occur at this time in the life cycle can be challenging, they are certainly not insurmountable. Like with everything else you have the formula to beat menopause at it’s own game! You have to follow informed strategies, seek professional guidance (where necessary) and adopt a balanced approach to exercise and nutrition. With this formula, it is possible to deftly navigate these changes while maintaining great self esteem, health and vitality.
So, ladies, eat well and move! Walk, dance, or do a little yoga—you have to keep that body moving. Make meaningful healthy changes to your diet. It’s not about depriving yourself, but about making smarter choices. Include nutrient-dense foods. As you age, muscle mass is lost so, support muscle mass by increasing protein intake. Also, incorporate resistance training into your exercise routine.
After all, what excites you? Is it your confidence-building reflection in the mirror, or the fleeting enjoyment of devouring generous helpings of ice cream, pizza and soda? Is it fitting into the favourite pieces in your wardrobe (that once made me feel fantastic), or indulging in all the delicacies of the moment?
Finally, for those, uh, intimate dryness moments, don’t be shy! Grab some lubricant, and maybe make it a little date night ritual.
So there you have it, menopause in a nutshell! Keep your humour, keep your health, and remember: This is just a phase, but remember, with good health, vitality and a positive self image, queen, you are still fabulous over fifty!
